Meet Gerald Fluge

Gerald Fluge credits two experiences in childhood with his career choice in safety and rescue. Playing with matches, he caught a desk on fire. And when a train derailed in Mississauga, a firefighter carried him beyond the fire line to see what was taking place. 


His boyhood dream became a reality in 1989 when Gerald was hired on as a firefighter with the City of Toronto; he is currently a Captain with the City of Toronto Fire Services. He has served as a volunteer firefighter with the Township of Springwater and was on a one year exchange to Darwin, Australia.   



He is a shift training instructor in various disciplines within operations in the City of Toronto Fire Services and is qualified as a trainer/facilitator at the Ontario Fire College. Earlier work experience in a manufacturing environment and a successful entrepreneurial venture for four years has given Gerald the background and experience to serve the widely varied needs of his clients. Repeated comments on training evaluations are: “knowledgeable, good speaker, good discussion, fun, sharing of experiences, good role plays, excellent inter-activity, fun, interesting, answered all questions,” 

…and did we say “fun”!

To enhance the training qualifications and experience, First in Safety Training key personnel are also active health-care professionals and most are professional first-responders. This provides a unique perspective of having used the techniques being taught in the field regularly and knowing first-hand their value. It also provides added insight and interest to those taking the training by having the immediate knowledge base to answer questions and provide “real life” anecdotal information. 

Qualifications and Capacity 


Our team, was led by Gerald Fluge, owner of First in Safety Training has been established to provide scalable programming to meet the needs of our clientele. As authorized trainers with the Canadian Red Cross, we work in close association with local branches of the CRC wherever we are arranging our training courses to ensure our service standard meets and exceeds the requirements of the CRC.

As a result of the health and safety training, Barrie Hydro took a serious stance on the AED issue (automated external defibrillator) and everyone has been trained on that also. The company has equipped all 15 of its trucks with AEDs so crews in the field have immediate access to them. Gerald has personally trained all 107 crew members. 

At Western we have a not only a legal responsibility to provide qualified First Aid training to our staff but a moral imperative to do so. It is second nature to do what ever is necessary to protect our staff and ensure their safety.


G&D services have come to fit nicely with these ideals and have always been ready and willing to accommodate dates and flexible hours training to help us meet our training requirements. After every course there is always positive feed back from the candidates about the training received from Gerald.
